Is it possible that only bending moment develops in a beam without any shear force and vice versa?

 Is it possible that only bending moment develops in a beam without any shear force and vice versa?


Take a look at these scenarios

There is no shear force.

Here is another case:

The above figure shows a simply supported beam with two symmetrically placed point loads P with the SF diagram and the BM diagram.

There is no shear force in the portion of the beam between the two point loads. This part of the beam is in pure bending

Here is one more case:

The above figure illustrates a case of a cantilever with an end moment that acts all along the span and there is no shear force anywhere.

The reverse situation of pure shear without moment in structures is very rare and I am unable to think of any except perhaps the following:

Look at the above figure. The bread slice is continuously supported at the bottom

It is subjected to “pure shear”by the action of the knife.
