Water in a 14mm diameter pipe flows at 2m/s. How many litres flow along the pipe in 1 minute?

Solution

The question “How many liters perminute” is referring to Volume Flow Rate (Q). The basic formula to calculate Q is Q=VA where :

Q = Volume Flow rate (m3/s)

V= Velocity (m/s)

A = Area of pipe (m). Cylindrical formula is, A = (pi)(D^2)/4

Hence, we know the Area = (pi)(0.014m^2)/4 = 0.000154m2

Therefore, Q = 2m/s * 0.000154m2 = 0.0003 m3/s

Since the question is to get Q in Litre/minute, therefore;

Q (liter/minute) = 0.0003m3/s * 60s * 1000l

= 18 Liter/minute (the answer)
