Effective width of a T beam

The effective width of  T beam is the width of flange which develops uniform compressive stresses in the beam. In case of  T beam, such as slab casted monolatically with beams. In such cases only a part of flange contributes to the resisting compressive forces in the beam. That effective part is known as effective width of beam.

In simple words, it represents the width of flange where the compressive stresses are uniform.
